6 Things To Consider When Choosing Exterior Paint Colors In Chico, CA
Choosing the right colors for your home’s exterior can add curb appeal as well as help protect your investment. Color selection can often be a daunting task for many people however. The following may help you make your decision. As with any post; if you can extract one good point, then it’s well worth the time invested!
1: Check HOA Guidelines
If you are in an HOA then this is probably a good place for your first consideration. Most HOA’s will have a list of approved colors for the homes in your community, and for good reason. If you find colors you like that aren’t on the approval list, you should still run it by your HOA. We have painted several houses with colors that weren’t on the accepted list at the time. Often times the HOA will accept the colors and add it to the approval list. It may be worth pursuing, and you would have the only house painted in those colors at least for some time.
2: Check Out The neighborhood
It’s always a good idea to check the color schemes of the houses in your neighborhood. You don’t want colors that will clash with your surroundings. Also, you most likely won’t want the exact colors of your neighbor, nor will they. I can say this from experience as I have seen it happen several times, often being a bit awkward!
3: Coordinate With Roof And Other Existing Features
Very important and often overlooked is the color of your roof. You want a color that will blend well with your roof, as it may be a long time before it’s replaced. Vice versa if you are planning on a new roof soon. Other areas to consider may be any brick or stone work on your home.
4: Climate
Keep climate in mind when choosing colors. Lighter colors reflect sunlight and help keep homes cooler in hot weather. The lighter colors also hold up better to the suns damaging rays. Darker colors absorb heat and will make the home considerably warmer in the Summer months. A good option is to use the darker colors on trim and doors, while opting for a lighter color on the body.
5: Landscaping
Checking your landscaping is also a good idea as it may be something that won’t change. The areas surrounding your home should be taken into consideration so you can choose colors that won’t clash.
6: Test Samples
Many people benefit from having color samples of paint, while others may not require it at all. You may be simply re painting in like colors or not too particular. Important to note however; When you’re looking at color samples on paper, phone or computer screen. There may be a significant difference compared to actual paint on the house. If you use paint samples; paint a small square in a few different areas of the house. Check your samples several times throughout the day. Natural light changes throughout the day affecting how a color will look.
