What is Oxidation and how can it be removed?

Oxidation

Typical Oxidation on houses occurs when the suns UV rays start to break down molecules in the paint. Oxidation can appear on all paint over time, but higher quality paint will hold up better to the suns rays. Oxidation causes a dull chalky appearance on the surface of the paint. It is common on vinyl and aluminum siding, Hardy plank, Steel roofs and buildings. It will also appear on the exteriors of house and building paint. Vinyl and aluminum siding that hasn’t been painted  may also be susceptible to oxidation.

Identifying Oxidation

Old and worn paint may have the same appearance as oxidized paint. Rub your finger on the dull flat areas of the building. If it leaves a chalky residue; that is Oxidation. You  must be very careful if you wash a building where Oxidation is present. If you apply any pressure it will remove parts of the Oxidation leaving a blotchy mess. You can soft wash a building without disturbing it but you will still be left with the Oxidation.

Removal of Oxidation

It is possible that the Oxidation can be removed and that repainting may not be necessary. Regardless, if the building needs to be repainted; the Oxidation must first be removed anyway. You will most likely need a professional with experience in Oxidation removal as it is generally not a DIY project.

We apply a chemical solution designed to break down the oxidation. The surface must be wet and cool before application. In most cases it will have to be agitated before rinsing. It will require a lot of brushing and often reapplication of chemical depending on the level of oxidation. The chemical cannot be allowed to dry on the surface and must be thoroughly rinsed after brushing.

In conclusion

There have been times when we are called to repaint a building that is heavily oxidized, but doesn’t require painting. The paint underneath the oxidation may still be good and look nice after the cleaning. In this case, the Customer’s are very pleased to prolong the need to repaint, saving them a lot of money. However, as mentioned earlier; even if the building has to be painted, the oxidation still needed to be removed prior.
